Virginia's
Western Highlands is a four county region located roughly north of Roanoke
and west of Staunton inĀ Virginia. The region has nearly half a million acres
protected in the USĀ Forest Service system and offers unparalleled recreational
opportunities as well as unique Appalachian cultural experiences.
The region also contains a number of historic downtowns and small settlements
where lodging and dining opportunities are available. These small, historic
towns and villages offer the visitor a unique glimpse into the past of the
Virginia's Western Highlands. Many of these small towns feature unique historic
architecture against the backdrop of the beautiful Allegheny Mountains of
Western Virginia.
Both in the small towns and at various establishments scattered throughout
the region, one can find unique handmade arts and crafts to purchase and
adorn his or her home. Also scattered throughout the region, one can find
the remains of iron mining/smelting sites, former railroad depots, and other
historic remains of the former railroad and iron industry of the 19th century.
